Heavy Skies: Red Series

About a year and a half after the first Heavy Skies pieces, I revisited the concept with the idea of adding a colour.

I wanted a colour that would add to the narrative of an improbably heavy, solid block suspended in the air. I tried many kinds of yellows but couldn’t find one that integrated cleanly. Blues looked too airy, as though about to blow away. A deep, strong red suggested the colour of a dramatic sunset or sunrise without being too literal. Some cracks and chips united the red with the black and brought a much-needed warmth to the series while maintaining the central illusion.

Some sketches from that time.
